Who We Are
The revolution is here!
No more waiting for someone else to pick you for the job, the part, or the opportunity.
Create your own! It’s time to Pick Yourself!
Uncover your passion. Embrace your unique process. Become grounded in the present moment. Engage in active play.
Co-Founders, Christopher Beaulieu and Jess Pillmore, began teaching and creating together in 2001, but the traditional format of teaching artist wasn’t enough. In 2005, Creatively Independent was born from a desire to destroy the “starving artist” stereotype and activate the arts in education, bringing back a balance of education–drawing out that which is latent–and training–passing down proven techniques.
The revolution slips into every crack like liquid: flowing from original to classical works, from teacher to student, from performer to audience. We travel internationally teaching/performing with the hope of embedding the roots of art back into our daily lives. CI tours 250+ days/year engaging students from toddler-professional in residencies, keynotes, consultations and physical theatre performances. Combined, the Co-Founders have directed/choreographed over 60 shows from Off-Broadway, Fringe, International, Regional and Educational.

JESS PILLMORE (Artistic Director & Co-Founder) is a shape shifter in the worlds of theatre, dance, music, and creative coaching with a solid spine of “Yes, you can!” Over the past 20 years, Jess has worked as an international guest artist (K-post grad, professional development, conferences), director/choreographer (International, Off-Broadway, fringe, regional, educational), singer/songwriter (3 Nat’l releases, 1 musical) and published author. Her book, Creatively Independent: Life on Your Terms with Play, Community & Awareness, was supported by international best-seller Seth Godin, her provocative essay on ageism in education appeared in Psychology Today, and her series on Sustainable Artistry is now at HowlRound.
Jess brings the revolutionary power of the “What if?” to any situation. She delights in constructing impossible tasks and then playfully stepping into them. Her talent as a creative hacker allows her to bring seemingly disparate groups together with dynamic results. Jess is known for her crazy ideas, a tendency to communicate through jazz scatting when excited, and an infinite supply of hope.
Currently, Jess is workshopping two new musicals: It’s All Right Now, a modern parable about living in the Now, written with songwriter, Ron Morris and A Fire Just Waiting (working title), a Joan of Arc rebirth featuring Ani DiFranco’s music and lyrics. She is also co-writing “Shakespeare’s Ensemble” with Chris Beaulieu, activating an ensemble focused process within classical theatre.
