On-Site Teacher Workshops

Playful Professional Development is our specialty.

Our work is guaranteed to provoke, empower and spark you in ways we wish professional development could be, but rarely is. You will find support networks, creative resources and a deeper sense of purpose when you play with us.

CREATIVE OWNERSHIP:

The pressures of ever-changing goal posts and heavier focus on quantitative, rather than qualitative, assessments have tipped the scales of education—for students and teachers—towards training rather than exploration. It is a focus on surviving rather than thriving, but in order to progress we need to do both. The only way to maintain this delicate balance is by actively engaging creative ownership: caring deeply and taking personal responsibility for what you are creating: the personal process of how you learn. Apathy, risk aversion, and perfect—but passionless—performance in class are all signs of creative ownership deficiency. This must change! Creative ownership demands personal choices about identity, intention, and impact beyond themselves. The ripple effect of active, creative ownership in the classroom is stunning: lightens the educator’s load, empowers the student, makes the material personally relevant, inspires the ensemble to take greater risks, and supports the process and the product. It is what makes a curriculum reach beyond the class period and into their everyday explorations. As educators, it is our job to facilitate that journey; that is the true preparation for the real world, to take creative ownership of what you create, who you create with, and why. Without this foundation, we are merely producing replaceable parts in a machine.

Full-day professional development (possible to break into two):

  • Education Addressing Identity, Intention, and Impact (Part 1)

Education based in creative ownership is a holistic alternative promoting sustainable artistry towards life long learning, risk taking, ferocious play, curiosity, empathy, failing gloriously, and self assessing success. The essentials to creative ownership—caring deeply and taking personal responsibility—are addressed head on by deconstructing conventional modes of teaching/directing that prevent ownership, creating space for individual adaptation and relevance, engaging students’ through play, curiosity, and self assessment, and redefining the teacher/director’s role in the process.

  • **PART 2 – choose either An Inspiring Vision for all subjects or Ensemble Devising Inside Shakespeare for theatre specific focus:
    • An Inspiring Vision – Creative Curriculum Design (Part 2) – Hitting a wall during a scene or character development? Table work and dramaturgy only getting your actors so far? You’ll explore how to assess needs within the rehearsal process; feel when to let go or lean forward in an intention; raise the stakes; and excel through buoyant play. This lecture/workshop breaks it down and then sets you up to create and play.
    • Ensemble Devising Inside Shakespeare (Part 2)Instead of making Shakespeare relevant to your students, highlight your students’ impact in the world through Shakespeare’s words. This experiential workshop focuses specifically on engaging artistic identity first to then connect with the text. Learn how to adapt devising techniques to enrich published works by honoring the class and the playwright.
